Today, there are 915 local active Conferences of the Society visiting people in their homes. Collectively, they have over 9,000 volunteer members, who make more than 400,000 visits to homes throughout every parish in the country every year.
All assistance offered by the Society is given in a non-judgemental spirit, carefully based on the needs of each individual or family seeking help. Each year we help people who are struggling to put food on the table, to heat their homes, to pay for their children’s education or pay for basic health care or other essential costs.
But it’s not all about paying bills.
Poverty today comes in many different forms. It encompasses any circumstance which prevents an individual from living with dignity and excludes him or her from ordinary life and activities. For this reason, the Society also provides resource centres, daycare centres, holiday homes, social housing and education and training grants.

This is the story of how my family endured a tragic loss, and of our Mum’s lifelong gratitude to St Vincent De Paul who did so much to help us.
Sadly, this is her last ‘thank you’...
The writer of this story is wearing the fashionably questionable white shorts with the knobbly knees. Looking at this picture, you would be forgiven in thinking that we were a normal family holiday in Co. Wexford in the 70s.
But a few years earlier our family endured the tragic loss of mum’s loving husband, our wonderful dad, who died aged 34. Mum now faced the prospect of a very uncertain future trying to raise five children. Of course, we had no idea of what was happening, nor could we comprehend the pressures that had befallen her while she tried to piece her life back together.
Mum reached out to SVP who offered financial help and support... that was a light in a very dark tunnel for Mum.
And so, started what was the most incredible friendly and supportive help from SVP for our mum in her time of need, support that enabled her to focus on raising her family.
I don’t know how often Mum sought help from SVP, but her widows’ pension and the minimal wages she was able to earn as a cleaner or factory worker couldn’t have covered all the bills and expenses, she had with five of us.
I fondly remember going with mum to SVP’s shop in Mountjoy Square for school shoes. Another fond memory is the smell of turkey cooking and the prospect that we could enjoy Christmas like everyone else. This festive treat was thanks to SVP. And for so many years Mr Mulvaney (I do hope I got his name right) would call to wish Mum a very Happy Christmas and hand her a beautiful hamper. We are very thankful to St Vincent De Paul for these magical memories and making us as children feel ‘normal’.
I hope I have captured in some small way how much SVP did for our family. Mum never forgot it. No matter how short she found herself financially, she always gave back to St Vincent de Paul.
Mum passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in February. Myself and my sister were entrusted to look after her will. As always Mum wanted to donate to St Vincent De Paul. So, sadly, this is “Our Mum’s Last Thank You” and while it may be only €100 it comes from a mother who was eternally grateful, and in the knowledge that this family represents all the great work SVP does.

Once you take good care of your loved ones in your will you may decide to leave the balance of your assets – or a percentage of what is left of them – to the Society of St Vincent de Paul. This type of bequest is called a residuary bequest. The words you need to add to your will if you wish to leave a residuary bequest to SVP in your will are as follows:
“I give to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of (insert local address of SVP here) all (or a % of) the residue of my estate whatsoever and whose so ever, and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other officer, for the time being of the said Organisation shall be a full and sufficient discharge of the same.”
Or, you may decide to leave a set amount of money, or a specific gift item, to SVP in your will. This type of bequest is called a pecuniary bequest. The words you need to add to your will if you wish to leave a pecuniary bequest to SVP in your will are as follows:
“I give the sum of €----------- or I bequeath (the item specified) to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of (insert local address of SVP here) and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer, or other officer, for the time being of the said Organisation shall be a full and sufficient discharge of the same.”
